How A Zambian is Driving Change for a Greener Africa

Happy Wednesday, Triblings

Did You Know?

Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, banned plastic bags as far back as 2008, making it one of the first countries in the world to do so. This bold move drastically reduced waste, kept streets litter-free, and set the stage for Kigali to become Africa’s cleanest city. The ban is so strict that travelers entering Rwanda must leave plastic bags behind at the airport.

And just last month, we interviewed Martin, an environmentalist from The Zambia, who is also changing the narrative and promoting a sustainable future in his country. His story reminds us that the movement for a greener Africa is growing stronger with every voice.

Additionally, we’ll be spotlighting one of our African Gems: Nneka, the fearless daughter of Aloma. Her journey is a testament to courage, heritage, and the power of standing tall in one’s truth.

So, let’s get right into it.

TAFRO Feature – African Trailblazer: Martin Malenga

Martin Mulenga is an award-winning environmentalist and founder of Integral Cooperative Society, a company transforming how waste is managed in Lusaka. He started with no money, just passion by organizing community clean-ups. What began as a small effort has grown into a company that collects and recycles waste, while also turning it into useful products like fire bricks.

Martin’s inspiration comes from his childhood and African roots, where keeping the environment clean was part of community life. His work has been featured on the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation and in national newspapers, and today his company is recognized as one of the leading waste management initiatives in Zambia.

For Martin, waste is not just rubbish, it is something valuable. His mission is to create jobs for young people, inspire communities to protect the environment, and show that anyone can start a movement with determination.

My dream is to leave behind a generation that respects the land and treats waste as a resource,” he says. “If young people can see opportunity where others see problems, then Africa will always have solutions for the future.
