TAFRO Feature – African Trailblazer: Samuel Olarewaju
Samuel Ogunsola is a PhD researcher and a dedicated community leader from Nigeria. Born and raised in Nigeria before moving to Winnipeg, Canada, for graduate school.
Samuel’s expertise lies in Physiology, where he explores the intricate world of DNA and genes, investigating how these biological blueprints shape our health. Beyond research, he is driven by a passion for empowering others, especially women in STEM.
In 2020, Samuel co-founded SWIS Africa (Supporting Women in STEM Africa), an initiative that offers mentorship, visibility, and skill-building programs for African women pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. In 2023, SWIS Africa was honoured with the Passion in Science Award from New England BioLabs, a prestigious global recognition of their impact and innovation.
Samuel also founded the FoodEnges Initiative, which promotes awareness around substance abuse, nutrition, and non-communicable diseases, and he supports emerging youth leaders across Africa through a third initiative focused on capacity-building and networking
In addition to his nonprofit work, Samuel is the executive director of Pluma's Consults in Winnipeg, where he helps startups and small businesses craft their branding, strategy, and launch plans. Samuel remains focused on creating a future where African youth dare to dream big.
Rooted in his African identity and driven by his love for his people, Samuel strives to leave a legacy that reminds Africans they don’t have to shrink because of perceived inadequacies but rather believe they can tackle big problems and impact their communities with confidence, boldness, and without apology. In his words, “Africa’s future is written by those who dare to dream and lead without apology."
